Within the super-competitive truck segment, none may have bigger expectations to meet than the 2019 Chevy Silverado. Ever the runner-up (to Ford’s iconic F-Series) Chevy approached 2019 with an appreciable mix of gusto and trepidation. Sure, Ford had offered up a notable weight reduction that was met with applause, but it received plenty of criticism due to their use of aluminum as the primary component. Chevy knew that a more progressive approach was needed to garner the same amount of praise and silence the naysayers.
But just because the domestic mainstays have a secure hold on the top spots doesn’t mean that relative upstarts like Toyota and Nissan don’t pose an equal threat. Offering innovative design philosophies, competitive performance and a wealth of technology, the proverbial pie has never been redistributed as aggressively as it has in recent years. So, what steps has Chevy taken to position themselves for success in 2019?
Well, it starts with a foundation of excellence. Having been voted “Most Dependable” by J.D. Power and Associates, the Silverado serves as one of Chevy’s cornerstones of excellence. With V8 options that serve us Best-in-Class Horsepower and Fuel Economy ratings, there’s a lot to like. But legacy still won’t do much to narrow the gap.
Well…a 450lb weight reduction, improved bed strength and increased cargo volume are a great place to start when you’re talking about the Chevy’s centennial offering. Addressing the naysayers of Ford’s approach, Chevy opted for a mixed materials approach that incorporated aluminum wing panels, steel fixed panels and carbon-fiber components as well. And despite the reduction of weight, the new 2019 Chevy Silverado boast a 10% jump in torsional rigidity meaning that it’s stronger than ever.
Factor in an evolved suspension, six powertrain configurations and some noteworthy utility features like a multi-purpose tailgate, numerous tie-downs, and reinforced steel floor and it’s hard (in our opinion) not to see the appeal.
