When GMC decided to revive the Hummer, it knew the challenge would be shattering the stigma around this gas-guzzling giant. Even before fuel costs were making front-page news, the Hummer models of the past were under harsh scrutiny for how little mileage they got out of a tank of gas. But despite that reputation, the Hummer garnered a loyal fanbase, leaving many drivers devastated when it was discontinued. The original Hummer H1 of the 1990s was an 8,000 lb monster that only got 10 MPG. Yet, it still sold like hotcakes.
However, time wasn’t kind to the original Hummer models. Due to factors like fuel efficiency, environmental concerns, and the onset of the 2008 recession, the Hummer was discontinued in 2009. However, after General Motors recovered and the automotive market turned its attention towards electric powertrains, the Hummer made its triumphant return. In a move that perhaps no one expected, a lineup of brand-new Hummer models appeared at GMC dealers. But this time around, the Hummer doesn’t even have a gas tank. The modern Hummer is just as large and commanding, but it is now powered by an all-electric drivetrain. So, how did GMC pull off an electric version of one of the largest consumer vehicles ever sold?
The Origin Story
In 1992, the original Hummer H1 made its debut at dealerships. Based on the United States military’s High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), the first civilian “Humvee” looked a lot like the military model. It gained popularity with drivers looking for a behemoth SUV, who weren’t concerned with the expensive price tag or the cost to fill the tank. When the price of a gallon of gas was relatively low in the late 1990s, sales of the Hummer were strong. In 2003, a smaller H2 model was released for those who wanted something less expensive.
Despite the move to a smaller, 6,500 lb model with the H2, criticism of the Hummer grew, and anyone with concerns about the environment boycotted the brand. In an attempt to make a less-offensive Hummer, GM released an even smaller H3 model in 2005. However, with the onset of the 2008 financial crisis, plummeting sales would be more than General Motors could withstand. In June of 2009, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and the Hummer vanished from the scene entirely.
After a decade away, GMC revived the moniker. The all-electric Hummer EV was announced in 2020, looking very much like the discontinued H2. Coming in at over 9,000 lbs and with a very similar exterior design to Hummer’s past, the EV delivers on all the popular aspects of the original models without the environmentally disastrous elements of the last generation. There are a few design elements of the EV that are different from the original H2. The newest model has a longer and wider frame and a higher curb weight due to the battery packs that power the motor. With pickup trucks like the Sierra leading sales for GMC, it was a great idea to revive the Hummer as an EV. After announcing the comeback, GMC was flooded with 90,000 pre-orders, and the Hummer EV was quickly out until 2024, which brings us to today.
2024 Hummer EV SUV
GMC goes above and beyond to signal its dedication to producing an environmentally friendly lineup that’s evolving with the times. It established the first all-EV production facility in Michigan called Factory Zero, where the Hummer EV and other all-electric models are being manufactured. With the immediate popularity of the Hummer EV, GMC forges ahead with a 2024 lineup of models that offer the best in capability, power, and all-around comfort.
The 2024 Hummer EV SUV comes in four available trim levels that offer drivers an artful blend of capability and efficiency. Choose from the Hummer EV2, Hummer EV2X, Hummer EV3X, and Hummer Edition 1. Each has a variety of features that are suitable for short and long commutes, heavy traffic, and off-roading. The first batch for 2024 will feature the Edition 1 and the 3X, with the other trims to come later. There’s more technology than ever packaged into these trims, with new elements that enhance every commute. The robust exterior can tackle a wide range of terrain, with more off-roading features available to conquer any adventure.
The powertrain is an Ultium Drive system with a three-motor setup that elevates performance to a new level. According to GMC, these Hummer EV models deliver 830 hp and an astounding 11,500 lb-ft of torque. Rare for a vehicle of these proportions, it’s estimated the 0-60 mph time is just 3.5 seconds with the available Watts To Freedom mode. The 2024 models promise best-in-class maneuverability that helps to offset the large size. Regen on Demand allows the regenerative braking to come online when you want and convert the energy back into electricity to recycle to the battery. Similar to other popular EVs, one-pedal driving controls both the acceleration and deceleration to preserve battery life.
Speaking of the battery, the 2024 Hummer EV is designed for long-range driving and simple charging. You can enjoy an estimated 314 miles of range on one full charge. It is compatible with the 800V DC Fast Charging stations and Level 1 and Level 2 charging at home. Built with an integrated body and battery structure, the double-stacked battery pack doesn’t interfere with off-roading. The all-new available Power Station generator provides three kW of exportable power and, get this, the ability to charge other EVs. With the assistance of the in-vehicle Energy App, you get real-time data on charging status and energy usage. You can use the app to create a charging schedule, get notifications about your at-home charging, and choose when to charge.
Designed for Off-Roading
One of the biggest reasons to buy this larger-than-life SUV is its keen ability to tackle off-roading. GMC offers satellite-rendered trail mapping that gives drivers the ability to navigate off-road trails at the touch of a button. The signature Crabwalk setting works with 4 Wheel Steer to let the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front wheels. This grants the Hummer EV the ability to drive diagonally at low speeds. Available Extract Mode comes in handy if you happen to get stuck. It works by activating the Adaptive Air Ride Suspension and lifting the Hummer EV approximately six inches to provide the extra ground clearance needed to maneuver over a boulder or ford a creek. If it weren’t for the long and wide frame, there wouldn’t be space for the thrilling 830 hp electric motors, the batteries that give you plenty of range, and all the cool features that grant the Hummer EV its off-roading prowess.
